Councilmember Lucinda Wynn has just endured a tense, stressful council meeting presided over by a highly unpopular newly elected mayor who closes the meeting abruptly before they've gotten through old business and walks out of City Hall, cursing. Lu walks across Town Square to recover over a warm bowl of homemade chili. When she walks into the Bank House Cafe, a popular eating and meeting spot in her hometown  Wynnville, Lu comes face to face with the mayor, who is drinking beer and arguing with Cafe owner Shannon Moore. Before Lu can find a seat, the Cafe doors open and an armed person in a black suit and helment dashes past shocked diners to the mayor's table. The loud crack of gunshots causes screams and mad dashes under tables. Lu pulls Shannon away from the shooter. But before the two women get very far, the shooter darts in front of Lu and says in a mechanical-sounding voice, "You're next, Lucinda Wynn."
